建筑工人 (CONSTRUCTION WORKER)

Wire, yarn, satin fabric, bamboo

The Webster Court House Project

Much of my work is influenced by my relationship with my mother; mainly our cultural and generational differences. As a first generation “American*”, traditional gender roles passed down through my mother contradicts my values as a feminist and an artist in America.

This piece, influenced by the domestic space in which it’s placed, depicts bamboo stalks, known as “the peasant’s plant”, coiled and interwoven by a lace pattern cut from a traditional Chinese satin fabric. My work questions why laborious work is associated with peasantry and the male’s role in society, and how those ideas are present universally.
